Within a highly constrained space, optimized the play area to create a total of 2000 square feet, incorporating multiple areas for learning development: nature, sand and water exploration, art area, pretend and gross motor play. Special features such as the custom easel, raised planting bed, and garden sitting "room" fosters autonomy by providing many age appropriate choices. Locally sourced, recycled redwood stumps were incorporated to provide tables and seating.

Twin Cities Community Preschool

Corte Madera, California

Nature-themed 5000 square foot play yard and associated new entry. Play areas included a large sand box with water source, gravel digging area, patio for creating art, stage platform, pretend play area, wood working, climbing area using logs and "natural" elements. Design drawings are being used for fundraising.

Phase 1: Conversion of a 580 square foot garage into a residential daycare center. Developmentally appropriate design accommodated various age groups within a constrained area, including a custom designed loft for toddlers to foster pretend play.

Phase 2: Provided space planning design services to help the client organize the expanded area resulting from a porch addition. In particular, re-worked the entry way sequence, active play zone, and designed new custom case work to efficiently organize and maximize the available space.

Mill Valley, California

Renovation and expansion of two adjacent playgrounds serving toddlers and preschoolers. The plan integrated natural features and materials throughout. Play areas were provided for the following activities: gross motor, social, art, gardening, manipulative, water and sand play. A tricycle path was incorporated to maximize play area space without compromising the required emergency vehicle access through the site. Other improvements included improved drainage, fencing, and landscaping.

Interior renovation of the main play area. Alterations included removing a fireplace and capturing the area for new cabinetry and a reading nook to organize and optimize use of the limited available space within the room.

Cottage Kids Children's Center

New 10,000 SF center with five class rooms for 70 children of various ages on a government owned campus. Preserved and incorporated the existing mature trees within the play yards. Shared "living room" complete with adjacent patio was included for gatherings with a home-like feel. Entry porch with cut-out motif casts playful shadows on the entrance flatwork.

12000 SF renovation/ addition for 72 children. Provided quality, varied spaces with a minimum of available natural day lighting. Integrated the center within the office vocabulary while still maintaining a child friendly identity for the center.

7100 SF remodel and addition with new exterior entry. The activity and art rooms, housed in the original wing, incorporated previously concealed trusses to form an articulated ceiling. The large multi-purpose room in the new wing included natural day lighting and views to the ocean.

Renovation of an historic Mission-style facility serving 88 children. Preserved the character of the building while re-designing the layout to facilitate 3 toddler and 4 preschool classrooms each with new access to the playground. Other improvements included a commercial kitchen and elevator.

Windham Heights Day Care Center

Willimantic, Connecticut

New 5400 SF center and adjacent play yards for 62 children adhering to tight budget constraints. Designed "pavilions" in the play rooms consisting of wooden columns and beams which were used to add a variety of scale and to define various zones within the rooms. Located within a subsidized housing development; exterior material durability and security were design parameters.

Complete renovation and expansion of an arts and crafts bungalow. Project encompassed adding a new kitchen, master bedroom suite and office including mechanical, electrical, plumbing as well as landscape upgrades.
